Earth Month: Week One Highlights

We had a great first week of Earth Month! We hit record number of volunteers, had our favorite mascot wearing green, and more! Continue on to read about our past events and for highlights on the ones that are coming up this week.

Big Green Friday
On April 5th, we held Big Green Friday, a spin off of Big Orange Friday. The campus was encouraged to wear green, even our favorite mascot Smokey sported a green T-shirt! The SGA Environment and Sustainability Committee handed out succulents for students and UT Recycling engaged students with a recycling game! There was a green cake, music, and an all around encouraging atmosphere to the day. Visit our Facebook to view photos from the event. Thank you to everyone who came by and experienced what sustainability is all about at UTK!

River Rescue
The Stormwater Team within Facilities Services and our office coordinated to hold our annual River Rescue on Saturday. This River Rescue was located at Second Creek, right on campus by the Neyland Greenway. We had 130 volunteers come and spend their Saturday morning with us to clean up our waterway. There were prizes for different items pulled from the creek, and everyone had fun learning about healthy water systems. Second Creek is a tributary of the Tennessee River, so picking up litter here prevents more damage to our beautiful river! Visit our Facebook to view photos from the event.

Get excited for this week’s events!

Career Mingle: Tuesday, April 9th 3pm-5pm.
In collaboration with our Career Services, we have planned an afternoon of interaction with students and employees. Some of the organizations that will be there include Beardsley Community Farm, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Ijams Nature Center, Peace Corps, and more. A panel will be talking about their experiences working in the environmental field and then students will get the chance to personally interact with each organization that will be there.

Sustainability Day of Service: Saturday, April 12th 9am-12pm
The Center for Leadership and Service coordinated the Sustainability Day of Service with us. Our awesome volunteers will be heading out all around Knoxville to work on projects related to sustainability. Some organizations that we will be serving with will be the UT Grow Lab, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Keep Knoxville Beautiful. We can’t wait for such a great event!

There are several other events this week at the Grow Lab, and in our community. Be sure to stay up to date with all of the Earth Month events by viewing the UT Calendar. With any questions about past or future events contact Carolyn Brown.
