RecycleMania is a nationwide competition and benchmark tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. This year, 424 schools are registered to participate, including 13 of the 14 schools in the SEC.
Last year, UTK placed 157th out of 167 schools in the waste minimization category, generating 12.3 lbs. of waste per person, per week. UT Recycling needs the students, faculty and staff to increase their individual waste reduction efforts in order to improve our campus’ standings from last year. This year, UT Recycling is introducing a Greeks Go Green competition: sorority vs. sorority, and fraternity vs. fraternity. The winning sorority and the winning fraternity will each earn $200 towards their philanthropy.
UT Recycling’s 9th annual RecycleMania will emphasize the 5R’s of waste reduction, for more info go to Bea Johnson’s Zero Waste Home Blog:
- Refuse what you do not need
- Reduce what you do need
- Reuse what you consume
- Recycle what you cannot refuse, reduce or reuse
- Rot (compost) the rest
Once you have signed up your RecycleMania team, you will be entered into the Greeks Go Green league on Net Impact: Small Steps, Big Wins. SSBW is a social media site where individuals will log their waste reduction actions to earn points for their chapter’s team. Additionally, Chapter members can host and participate in programs/DIY workshops related to the 5Rs, participate in programs hosted by UT Recycling, and attend selected campus events to earn additional points for their teams. Be sure to follow all guidelines for reporting in order to receive points.
Check out the point system for more detailed descriptions of how students can get involved.
